Christmas Bells 1983

On Christmas morning 1983 our bells featured in a BBC radio programme, which was broadcast nationally. The recording was made a BBC Sound Engineer, Paul Bush, who was a church bell ringer himself. You can hear the broadcast here.

From ‘The Radio Times’ 25 December 1983:
Sun 25th Dec 1983, 09:05 on BBC Radio 4 FM
Robert Hudson introduces a collection of Christmas bells from bell towers across the UK, including Exeter Cathedral, Devon; St Mary’s Church, Rougham, Suffolk; Glasgow Cathedral, Scotland; St Philip and St James, Holywood, Co. Down; St George’s Church, Poynton, Cheshire; St Botolph’s Church, Aldgate, London.

From ‘The Ringing World’ 20 January 1984:
Poynton ringers chose a course of the Oxford group of T.B. methods (Kingston, Sandal, Capel, London Scholars) and seven Sunday service ringers took part in the various ’’takes’’. The ringers were Heather Scarrott (17), Elspeth Friend (16), Rosemary Spencer, David Friend, Sid Hough, Wilf Scarrott and Peter Dyson. Two at school, a nursing sister, a computer expert, a retired policeman, an industrial chemist and an aeronautical engineer – this band produced some very pleasant evenly struck ringing.
